What’s in Your Digital Marketing Utility Belt – (Part Un)
And why you need one
Hidey ho, good marketers!
It’s strange to think about how marketing has changed over the decades and how it continues to rapidly change every single day.
Those of us who work in digital marketing are faced with varied and unique problems to solve. In order to stay on top, we must possess a level of determination and tenacity that can only be described by the word “moxie.” This is the attitude marketers must maintain to keep ahead of all the others who are making their career in the growing world of digital marketing. The amount of competition and demand, with the non-stop shifting atmosphere, makes this career choice a high-paced and formidable one. Choosing this path means you have nerve and resolve, but while moxie is vital, you also need to possess a certain set of digital marketing tools.
Any business that sells products or services utilizes digital marketing to bring in prospective buyers. Whether through email marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), pay per click (PPC), or another aspect of digital marketing, companies rely on digital marketing agents to make the right decisions for promoting their business. Marketing agents like you must understand and follow the trends and know how to best utilize different methods and websites to help their clients.
That’s where Marketing Moxie comes in. We will be providing some of the best tools and templates so that you can be all you are capable of being!
You may be asking, “Why do I need a utility belt?”
Just like any career, there are specific tools to help you get the job done. While some require wrenches and hammers, others require tools of a different kind. As a digital marketing agent, for example, your utility belt needs to be multifaceted.
Now, this does not mean you need to be a jack of all trades and a master of none. On the contrary, this means that you need to understand what tools are needed to accomplish the tasks set before you.
Would Batman ever leave the bat cave without his bat belt? So why would you?
Marketing is akin to fighting crime. Okay, I’m being a bit melodramatic, but you’re picking up what I’m putting down.
Marketers are the consummate problem solvers, and like Sherlock Holmes, we love to investigate. More importantly, we will get to the bottom of whatever challenge is put in our path.

Having the tools you need in your utility belt is essential, but, more importantly, knowing how to use them and when to use them is critical.
While some businesses will benefit more from email marketing, others will find more results in content marketing. You’ll also need to understand marketing analytics as well as determine what’s the best mix for each unique client or company you work for.
Additionally, you’ll need to be creative. Of course, there are moments when a creative mind will allow you to see outside the box, but these less than obvious routes are also something you probably learned while working toward this career.
Where creativity really shines can be observed in the areas where images are used and content is written. After all, no one will be interested if the imagery is uninteresting, and if the content doesn’t grab the attention of readers, no one will see the value in the services and products you’re trying to sell. Having the ability to make things interesting and attention-grabbing will take you farther in your career.
This shouldn’t need to be said, but a good digital marketing agent should be great at selling. Being persuasive without becoming pushy is essential. According to this Forbes article, pushiness is simply old school, and not in the good retro way. People don’t want to be told what to do. They want to be shown the best options and allowed to make an educated decision. Knowing how to word things to present the products and services of clients without it becoming too long-winded or overbearing can be a challenge. You have to be persuasive instead of pushy.
Lastly, any digital marketing agent should stay on top of trends. You have to know all about the digital marketing templates and tools out there in order to take full advantage. The digital world changes so drastically and so quickly that simply knowing the basics isn’t enough. You have to know what apps are trending, what social media platforms are growing, and what search words are at the top. You have to stay alert and be confident in your decisions; otherwise, your clients’ competitors will pull ahead.
Wrap Up
This career keeps you on your toes, but the adaptive atmosphere is a rewarding one to those who like a good challenge. It may be difficult sometimes; however, for those with the knowledge and skills, it can be an exciting journey.
In Part Deux of this series, you will be introduced to several examples of some key tools every digital marketer should have in their utility belt, from email service providers to content marketing analytic tools.
